A Day in the Life of an East Yorkshire Photographer

Ever wondered what a day in the life of a family photographer looks like? Spoiler alert: it’s a mix of cosy studio vibes, creative chaos, and the never-ending question—what’s for dinner?! Here’s a little peek behind the scenes of my daily routine.

Mornings: Coffee, Chat, and Studio Prep

My day starts early, even though I technically don’t have to! My daughter is 16 and more than capable of getting herself ready for school, but I love those few minutes in the morning when we have a little chat before she heads off. It’s a small but special part of my day.

Of course, no morning is complete without my first (and absolutely essential) coffee fix—because let’s be honest, caffeine is the real MVP in this job!

Before the day fully kicks in, I pop out to my garden studio to turn on the heater, making sure it’s warm and cosy, especially for newborn sessions. There’s nothing worse than a chilly studio when you’re working with sleepy little babies!

Setting Up and The Magic of Photoshoots 📸

Every session is different, so I take time to set up for each one—adjusting backdrops, making sure props are ready, and giving everything a quick clean. If I’ve had a cake smash session (which is basically the most adorable kind of chaos), then it’s all hands on deck to clear up the icing explosion!

Some days, I have just one session, giving me time to catch up on other tasks, and other days are back-to-back with families, newborns, and milestone sessions. I love the variety—every family brings their own energy, and no two shoots are ever the same.

A Little Fresh Air & "Wicked" Tunes 🎶

If I have a gap between sessions, I love to get outside for a walk—there’s nothing like a bit of fresh Yorkshire air to reset the mind. Right now, I’m completely hooked on the Wicked soundtrack, so if you see someone power-walking while dramatically lip-syncing "Defying Gravity," that’s probably me!

If time allows, I’ll squeeze in a quick trip to the gym, but let’s be real—sometimes the idea of a nap is just too tempting.

The Daily Dinner Dilemma & Editing Marathons 🍽️

Just like most of you, when evening rolls around, it's feeding time at the zoo, and I find myself asking the daily question—what on earth do we have for dinner?! If you have any meal-planning secrets, please send them my way.

Once dinner is sorted, it’s time for the big editing session. This is where I dive into your gorgeous galleries, tweaking colours, perfecting details, and reliving the beautiful moments we captured during the day. My go-to show while editing? Grey’s Anatomy and all its spin-offs! Yes, I know I’m late to the party, but I am completely obsessed. If I ever refer to a newborn as "McDreamy," you’ll know why.

Wrapping Up Another Day 🌙

By the time I wrap up, it’s usually late, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Being a photographer is about so much more than just clicking a camera—it’s about capturing memories, meeting incredible families, and turning moments into something that lasts forever.

So, that’s a little glimpse into my day! If you’re thinking about booking a session, just know that behind the scenes, I’m running on coffee, musicals, and a whole lot of love for what I do.
